An Architect Builds His Own Tiny House Studio Retreat to Escape the City

This modest cabin building is a single room with just enough space for a chair or cot or chair, was designed and built by architect Nicholas Hunt. Hunt runs the studio Hunt Architecture with his brother, Andrew, in addition to also works for larger firms. Hunt, is a Brooklyn, New York architect who just happened to have a garden outside of his back door and decided to use it as an experimental lab for his tiny house building vision. He built this tiny studio that is just fifty-five square feet and finished it off with simple hand-crafted detail. Hunt has managed to make this special garden retreat in a city where space is at a premium, in one of the most crowded cities in the world. The unique small house plans although tiny in size manages to showcase Hunts' architectural abilities.

When you step inside this garden retreat, you are met with a light, airy and bright space, and you feel as though you’ve stepped into a garden oasis far away from the city. The garden itself is only 1,300 square feet in size, and this artful tiny house structure helps to accentuate that. The tiny house garden retreat is a mere single room with enough space to plant a comfy cot or an easy chair. The walls are painted a pure white, making you feel like you might have just gone straight to Heaven. A half-inch reveal covers the front window, for privacy, and a skylight brightens the room from above. Once you’re in here, it’s difficult to believe that downtown Brooklyn is just a few short blocks away.

This is the perfect place for quiet contemplation, to lie back and read a good book, or even have an afternoon nap. It’s also big enough for two or perhaps three people to gather for a nightcap or quiet evening happy hour. It only cost Hunt about $1,200 to build this tiny house building, and over the course of four months, took only about seven days to build. The unique small house plan was very simple from start to finish. To build the tiny house building, he found building materials to make it geometrically interesting. He wanted to hand-build his tiny house design because he wanted to learn what it was like to be his client.

Hunt salvaged cedar planks from another building project, and his parents donated the white picket fence from their property in Massachusetts. The front window in the tiny structure is directed towards plants and trees, so anyone inside feels as though they are in a rural landscape. The window is partially covered in some slatted wood so you can see out but others cannot see in. The slats also let in ample light in the daytime. The minimal interior furnishings consist of rotating items from Hunt’s apartment, so it is always fresh and new. Although the tiny house building's exterior is a bright golden colour right now, he hopes for it to gently weather and fades and blend more into its natural background as the years go by.
