Did you know that hay isn’t just harvested to feed livestock but can also be used as an ecofriendly building material? After being cut, the grass is gathered into rows and left to dry naturally outdoors. Once it reaches the right level of dryness, machines compress it into large rectangular bales, which are then transported to the construction site.
To begin building, workers first pour a concrete foundation and set up a wooden frame to define the structure. The compressed hay bales are then fitted into the gaps within the frame, forming massive natural bricks.
Once the walls take shape, the hay surface is covered with a layer of wire mesh to hold everything in place and help the outer cement layer adhere better, creating a protective shell for the core inside. Walls made from hay bales are not only lightweight, making them ideal for earthquake-prone areas, but also provide excellent insulation, keeping the home warm in winter and cool in summer.
